Happy June Everyone! Amy asked me to remind everyone to file your FY19 reports so she can review and approve them! Thanks for the reminder, Ms. Region V Amy Wiatr-Rodriguez!! I always appreciate your help.I want to emphasize my fantastic staff today and to send virtual flowers. Our office has grown and the accomplishments leave me breathless and so excited!! I am so grateful to have found these knowledgeable and dedicated people.
Today is the final day to submit your telephone requests to Cecelia Aldridge, Cecelia.Aldridge@acl.hhs.gov and Jasmine Aplin Jasmine.Aplin@acl.hhs.gov. Just tell them how many of your elders are without phones or internet access. Remember those grandparents raising grandchildren!!! Thank you!
David has been working with USDA and launched our process to Buy Direct from American Indian Farmers. Check it out here, and please share with any American Indian farmers, growers, ranchers, harvesters and processors in your area. We’re hoping to establish a connection for purchasing wild rice, buffalo, corn, beans, salmon, berries and more! But we need your help to enroll our farmers.
Jasmine is busy with all things COVID-related, Medicaid, LTSS, Disabilities and anything else she can get her hands on! If she doesn’t know an answer she’ll find it for you!
Cecelia is always behind the scenes managing our grants, contracts and cooperative agreements, but she’s also involved in other projects as needed. She gets involved as you’re working on your reports and is your contact to the reporting management process. She is also helping to head telephone and interact access for you.
Leslie is the quiet orchestra director that is working on anything technical! She’s developing all our excellent guidance to program management, reporting, program tracking, COVID guidance, PMS expenditures, helping me with reports, and everything else that I didn’t mention!
Then there’s all the other Regional Liaisons…Percy Devine, Shelly Zylstra, Derek Lee, Jennifer Throwe, Robin Schwartz, Amy Wiatr-Rodriguez, Lacey Boven, Kathleen Otte and Constantinos Miskis. And in the Central Office are Edwin Walker, Yi-Hsin Yan, Alice Kelsey and Chris Mitchell. Title VI you are well covered with excellent ACL staff just waiting to help you.
REMEMBER, to contact FEMA with any COVID-related needs that we can’t pay for with Title VI funds. Contact any of us to help with that referral, if needed.
Did you see my new picture that swells my heart with pride? That’s my granddaughter Tressa Venice helping my Dad. She loves her Papa. He fell and broke some ribs, so she’s caregiving. She’s named after my grandma (Tresa) and my mom, Venice.
Have a great week from the ACL Crew from around the country.
Say their name so they are not forgotten: Jermain Morigeau, Montana |

Tribal Community Preservation and COVID-19
by Kerry Hoffschneider
Women with visions of planting seeds that build communities, don’t allow even pandemics to diminish their dreams. This DNA of endurance was planted unfairly and abruptly when the Pawnee were separated from the fertile soils of their Nebraska homeland. Still, the Pawnee carried their seed with them. But, the soils of Oklahoma were different, and their seeds were not acclimated there. The Pawnee Nation lost not only their homeland, but much of their ability to grow the seeds they loved.
Today, due to the leadership of Deb Echo-Hawk, the Keeper of the Seed for the Pawnee Nation, and the helping hands of many others, the Pawnee Seed Preservation Project has grown to around 20 growers across Nebraska and, most importantly, local growers have arisen at the Pawnee Nation in Oklahoma.

New On-Farm Market Directory Project: Get the Word Out!
The Office for American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Native Hawaiian Programs (OAIANNHP) is pleased to announce the creation of a new project to help develop a searchable list of American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Native Hawaiian farmers through the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) On-Farm Market Directory.
What are on-farm markets?
On-farm markets are managed by a single farm operator that sells products on their farm, or on a property next to their farm. Some on-farm markets may also deliver or ship their goods directly to your door.
Why purchase from on-farm markets?
Purchasing items from on-farm markets for your Title VI program is a great way to get fresh, in season products to serve to your elders while also supporting your local economy. Additionally, farmers in your community might offer traditional foods that may be difficult to find from retail grocery stores or food vendors. Buying goods from on-farm markets may also serve as a reliable alternative for products in times of crisis or economic instability.
How can I help?
Get the word out!!! Doing so may help your Title VI program and others by ensuring there are a large number of on-farm markets to choose from. We have developed a quick, easy application for farmers of federally recognized tribes, and it can be downloaded here on our website, https://olderindians.acl.gov/on-farm-market-directory.
Questions?
Please send an email to olderindians@acl.hhs.gov with the subject line “On-Farm Market Directory.” |
